Fire Hydrants
A hydrant is basically a large valve connected to the underground water main, which allows firefighters to access the city’s water supply in case of a fire. A large supply of water might be required to suppress large fires, and a fire truck can only carry so much. Therefore, a fire hydrant is needed to supplement firefighters with a continuous flow of water. Insurance companies will offer lower rates for properties that are physically located within a close proximity to fire hydrants, as they are essential to successfully suppressing fires.

Are your hydrants colour-coded correctly as per code? are the internal components lubricated and properly sealed? Since fire hoses can push out more than a thousand litres of water per minute; the supply of water carried by a fire truck is insufficient. Therefore, fire hydrants must always be in top shape and ready to serve at a moment’s notice. In the unfortunate event of a fire, large fines and potential criminal charges could be involved if firefighters are unable to use the hydrant due to a failure. As is the case with any mechanical system, the cold of the Canadian winter is most destructive to the internal organs of the fire hydrant. If you require a complete inspection or any other hydrant service, give us a call today at (613) 223-2223.
Testing, Inspection & Maintenance
In regards to testing, inspection and maintenance of hydrants, many people think this is the responsibility of the City. If this is what you think, you would be wrong. The city’s water supply extends only to the property line, terminated with a large valve. This is where the city’s responsibility for maintenance stops. From this point, the private property’s water line is responsible for distributing water all across the property. Therefore, if there is a hydrant located within your property limit; you are required to perform testing, inspection and maintenance and keep the hydrant in proper working order. Our Fire Hydrant Testing, Inspection & Maintenance page provides a description of the scope of work of the annual fire hydrant test.
